At FunktionAlley we are big fans of colour and were really pleased that when we launched our new site we could include a Decor department.  The papers are from Scandinavian designers and mainly consist of bold colours in geometric or floral prints.  We asked Madeleine Sidemo the designer of  Eco Happy to tell us a little about her inspiration.

I was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1960 and studied sales and marketing before realising my true passion for design. After studying in Florence, Italy and then Sweden I started a career in the fashion industry as an underwear designer and then worked in Sweden as a textile designer.

I saw designing wallpapers as a perfect development from my textile designs, when I received an invitation from Eco to join their design team I couldn’t resist to work for such a well-known wallpaper company. I think working for Eco was the best thing that has happened to me in my working career.

I felt that there were a lot of people that liked to express themselves with colour so to design the Happy collection I looked into the rich archive at Eco and found so many cheerful designs from the sixties and seventies and used these to develop the collection.

As a result the range does have a vintage feel but I hope that the collection will encourage people to be a little bolder than normal. People seem to be more interested in making a home personal and use wallpaper to reflect their personality. Due to the rise of the internet it gives them so much more to choose from, meaning designers need to be more alert and set interior trends. This is why at Eco we are always developing designs and printing techniques in our studio. With so many new designers coming into the industry the function of wallpaper is starting to move boundaries.

Thank you to Madeleine and the team at Eco for taking the time to speak to us.
