Creating your own home bar – bar stool addition
Creating your own home bar during lockdown – bar stool addition
With our third lockdown upon us and Covid unfortunately driving us all back inside, now seems to be the time we are all start looking at our living space once more! With restaurants and bars closed, home bars can be the ideal way to relax at home after a long day and to offer an intimate social atmosphere for the whole family to share. There’s something very appealing about being able to whizz up a couple of snazzy cocktails in the evening, making a kid friendly version too of course! They are versatile and can be used for occasional dining, the morning coffee, they are incorporated into most kitchens and even living rooms if you chose the right accessories can become your favourite lock meeting point.
Choosing the right seating can make an ordinary home kitchen bar, that bit more special. Traditional bar stools have been around for a long time, and can be appropriate for certain styles of kitchens, such as traditional or shaker kitchens similar to the classic bar aesthetic stated above; however, if you want your space to feel even more comfortable and inviting for longer periods of dining (or drinking), be sure to find seating with back support.
If you have traditional tastes and like a stool to be a stool! Our first suggestion would be the Magis Tibu Bar Stool. The Tibu bar stool is a reworking of the adjustable gas lift stool first introduced by Magis in 1997. The adjustable height is particularly useful if your kitchen breakfast bar is a not standard height.
Adjustable height is particularly useful if your kitchen breakfast bar is a not standard height.
It is the first collaboration between Magis and Norwegian design duo Anderssen and Voll. It seamlessly incorporates the gas piston into the flowing design, the release button is hidden under the seat. "It’s just what it needs to be, hard at the foot, tactile at the button and soft at the seat" says the designers Andersson and Voll. The frame is made from lacquered steel and the seat is polyurethane with a matching fabric cover. It comes in 8 different colours so would suit any décor.
If comfort is the aim an you intend to use the bar for dining or you entertain in the kitchen, the Gubi Beetle Bar Chair, has your home bars name all over it! If your home is more timeless possibly classic scandinavian classic and don’t want your seating to overshadow the kitchen with a heavy bar chair, then the Muuto Visu Bar Stool is probably the way to go. The Muuto Visu bar stool is a natural continuation of the popular Visu seating family by Mika Tolvanen. They are created to be a timeless seating suitable for various environments. The result is a stool that feels familiar but interesting. Available in three finishes and two heights and are versatile enough for multiple uses, not just at the kitchen breakfast bar but also in the home office or workshop (working at home much?) .
Our last offering, like the last, can be used not just as a kitchen bar stool. The STUA Onda bar stool is a subtle illustration of how effectively form can be allied with function. Inspired by the natural shape of a wave, the soft rubber seat moulds itself to the lower part of the back to offer extra lumbar support and encourage good posture. The seat has outer shell made from polypropylene, when the second seat skin is added it is mixed with silicone to give the seat a rubberised texture. This can either be a contrast on a white shell or matched. The legs are available in shiny chromed steel, or matt black for indoor use, or in matt stainless steel for indoor or outdoor use if you are lucky enough to have a home bar in your garden.
They are available in three heights, 45cm for dining table height, 66cm for kitchen counter height and 76cm for bar height counters (110cm plus)

Happy New Year!
Pomegranate Mojito Mocktail
- 3 tbsp pomegranate seeds
- big bunch mint
- 2 limes, quartered, plus slices to garnish
- 1l pomegranate juice
- 500ml lemonade
A day ahead, divide the pomegranate seeds between the holes in an ice cube tray, top up with water and freeze.
Reserve half the mint for serving and tear the rest into a large jug with the lime quarters. Using a rolling pin, bash the mint and lime to release the flavours. Add the pomegranate juice and lemonade. Put ice cubes in each glass, then strain over the pomegranate mix through a small sieve. Garnish with lime slices and more mint.
