Perfect Partners - Sofa and Chair Combo
Pairing up furniture can be hard, especially when it’s a heavily used space like a living room. You have to consider colours, styles, fabrics, and scale, all of which can be confusing and overwhelming. Which is possibly why so many people throw their hands up in the air when it comes to finding that perfect sofa and chair combo and just end up purchasing one of the pre-made sets that so many big box stores offer. However, there are about as many sofas and chairs out there as there are people! Which means there are a lot of good, unique combos to be had. It just takes a little bit of work, imagination and the help of The Team here, at Funktion Alley!
We have put together a list of things to consider to help you make your choice, plus some great pieces we love and know would be a great addition to your living room space!
If you really want to create a space that flows well, your chair shouldn’t be very small if you have a huge and grand sofa. They should both be in keeping and compliment each other in scale and be relatively the same size and proportion.
Although this rule can sometimes be broken, typically you will want the pairing to have two complimentary fabrics. You may want to give a leather couch paired with a set of leather chairs a swerve, or a velvet couch paired with two velvet chairs. The same goes with patterns. If you have a patterned chair then get a solid sofa, to avoid a busy room. As mentioned, this rule can be broken, but is a bit harder to pull off so play it safe by sticking to the rules!
If you decided to go for a sofa that is quite heavy and boxy then consider having a chair that has a longer leg profile to help balance out the visual weight. Or vice versa, if your chair is really heavy then look for a sofa that has a little bit of a leg to it so that neither feels too heavy or too light.
Muuto have a great range of both 2 and 3 seater sofas, plus chairs that would work a treat!
The first option in the 3 seater is the Muuto Outline 3 Seater Sofa, it comes in 2 colours it is the latest offering designed by Norwegian duo Anderssen & Voll (formally of Norway Says). Now for those tricky armchairs! Here are a few ideas to help make your choice a bit easier;
As the first grand lounge chair by Muuto, the Muuto Doze Lounge Chair arose from a desire to create a design with a modern expression, referencing the ideas of Scandinavian design with hints of 1970’s design for a contemporary perspective on the archetypical lounge chair.
Designed by long-time Muuto collaborators Anderssen & Voll, the design has a contemporary expression through the vibrant lines and folds of its large back and armrests, giving personality to the design alongside added comfort and shelter for its user. With slender legs in embedded steel for a light, hovering expression. This would make a statement when pairing with a sofa.
The Stua Costura armchair will add some Mediterranean style to your living areas. STUA is synonymous with light design and the Costura sofa and easy chairs are no exception. The lightness in appearance is achieved by an internal frame which uses bent ply, this allows it to be strong but light. The legs can be placed into two positions either splayed forward or to the side. In addition to the basic chair a 30 x 60 cushion is supplied per seat. You have a choice of colour and pattern with this option.
Last option on the list is the Fritz Hansen Ro Easy Chair.
Ro by Jaime Hayon is a contemporary wing back chair that is comfortable and sculptural at the very same time. Perfect as a reading chair in the study or as a statement in a large living area. Ro gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself and have a moment to yourself.
You can choose from the selection of Christians Havn textile colours.
The shell is made of hard polyurethane foam with fiber glass re-enforcement along the edges. The seat cushion for the chair and the foot stool is made of moulded polyurethane foam to achieve the right form and comfort. The back cushion on the chair is made of soft foam to increase ergonomics and comfort, with a base in either aluminium or oak.
