Birger Dahl is one of Funktion Alley’s featured interior lighting designers. Born in Norway in 1916, Dahl is now regarded as one of Scandinavia’s leading post–war interior architects.
He was educated at the Norwegian National School of Arts and Crafts (SHKS) in Oslo and was one of the first students to be supervised and guided by the leading Norwegian architect, Arne Korsmo.
Dahl has since designed a range of lights and lamps for the interior lighting brand Northern Lighting, and are available to buy from Funktion Alley.
Another notable achievement by Dahl occurred in 1947, when, whilst working as a teacher at SHKS he also worked as chief designer for Sønnico (Oslo). During this time Dahl focussed on his design philosophy centring on the promotion of lighting as honest, logical and functional. This works on the logic that the light object must always reach complete harmony with its surrounding humans and architecture.
Natural and functional lighting is evident in his contemporary designs for the Northern Lighting collection, clearly exemplifying the Birger Dahl philosophy.
